Recently,
I was asked by several of our customers that were in need of
a PC replacement if their next purchase should be a laptop or
desktop. With so many
options available, it is easy for one to get overwhelmed not to
mention misled by pricing, features, rebates, extended warranties
and optional external accessories.
Desktop
computers are typically bulky and weigh 4 to 5 times more than
laptops. Laptops
however are light, very low profile and weigh on average, four
to six pounds. Devices like mouse, keyboard, speakers, display
and wireless receivers are typically included but must be added
separately with a desktop.
Power is definitely one factor
that must be taken into consideration when choosing between these
two. Historically, laptops have
always been slower but have recently improved in performance because
of the increase in resources offered by today’s technology. Some
new loaded units are so powerful that they can even satisfy the
needs of most high end gamers. These PC’s are typically
larger, heavier and are known as “Desktop Replacements”. If
high end gamming is not what you’re looking for, almost any
off the shelf laptop, including ones with the low end Celeron processors
can handle photo editing, printing documents, DVD watching, email,
internet browsing and music applications.
Lastly, you need to consider
the price, repair and maintenance. All
desktops and laptops for the most part break the same whether you
spend $300 or $3,000 and are more disposable now than ever so don’t
go overboard. As far as repair, well, desktops usually cost
less to repair since the parts are modular and much easier to access. With
laptops, a large number of the components are permanently affixed
to the motherboard so when one of these devices go out, you will
be looking at a repair cost comparable to the replacement of the
entire unit.
All in all, I would have to
say that if you are a simple end user like most of us who check
email, browse the internet, listen to music and look at pictures,
almost any machine you buy today whether it be laptop or desktop
will have more than you need. If
you are a higher end use then you need to seriously consider your
options and weigh out benefits of one over the other.
