Internet
surfing has become more sophisticated and exciting in order to
keep up with users’ surfing habits and new web technology. For
instance, web designers use a variety of tools to make websites
appealing to the eye and fun to visit. Websites are no
longer static with fixed pictures and text; now they have scrolling
text, flashing imagines, audio enhancements, and a host of other
effects.
There are a variety of Internet browsers such as Internet
Explorer (IE), FireFox, Netscape,
and Opera to
mention a few. These new browsers offer a variety of options,
the most exciting being tabbed
browsing –a means to open one single window and have
several websites loaded at the same time. Other options
include Pop-up blocker, Phishing filter,
integrated instant messengers, emailing, and more.
A safety feature found on most of the recent browsers allows surfers
to secure their PCs
from what are commonly known as “internet intruders”. This
is a built-in feature that does not need to be turned on or off;
it simply is there to keep viruses, Trojan
horses, and other “undesirables” from invading
your PC.
We do not believe that one browser is superior to the other and
it is simply a matter of preference. It is possible to download
and install several browsers on your PC and use them at the same
time. We have all the browsers listed in this article on
our PC’s at the office so that we can play with the new features
and understand the differences and similarities amongst them.
We encourage you to try browsers like FireFox, Netscape, and Opera
and even download the latest IE 7.0 You will have fun and
enjoy bringing your Internet surfing skills into the New Year
– Yes! 2007.
If you have any questions about browsers, please feel free to contact our
office for information on an upcoming workshop at the JCC on
Internet browsers and how to surf the net safely.
